Background

Meet Syam

Syam Kosigi came to the United States of America from India nearly three decades ago and made Newark, Delaware his home — living in District 5 for the past 20 years. He brought with him the values that shaped his early life: compassion, service, and a deep commitment to community.

After building a successful career in the IT industry, Syam felt a growing responsibility to give back to the society that had welcomed him. That sense of purpose led him to Sewa International USA, where he has volunteered for more than two decades — working on homeless shelters, disaster relief, refugee empowerment, and youth service programs.

During COVID-19, Syam mobilized volunteers to produce and distribute masks across local communities and hospitals, and participated in FEMA-led vaccination drives. His leadership during that crisis exemplifies the hands-on, get-it-done approach he will bring to the County Council.

He has served in several leadership roles with Sewa, including Vice President of Organization and VP of Administration & HR. He is also a member of the Christina School District Citizens Budget Oversight (CBO) Committee, actively participating in budget reviews and financial planning — giving him direct experience with how public funds are managed and where accountability is needed.

Syam's passion for service is rooted in his upbringing. His mother was a teacher, and his father — a senior engineer — spent more than 30 years running schools in underserved neighborhoods. Their lifelong commitment to helping others continues to guide Syam's work today.

Syam is a dedicated practitioner of yoga and meditation. He credits his wife, Sree, and their children for being his constant source of strength and inspiration.

The Case for Change

Why I Am Running

I observed that many long-standing issues in District 5 remain unresolved, and residents increasingly feel that their concerns are not being heard. People describe a lack of communication and almost no meaningful interaction with the current council leadership.

Important community matters — such as the rapid push for hyperscale data centers without strong regulations, the loss of open spaces, environmental impacts, pressures on local businesses, and the steady rise in property taxes and utility bills — have gone unaddressed.

Seeing this gap firsthand, I felt compelled to step forward. I believe I can bring a new approach, new ideas, and a commitment to act as the community's eyes, ears, and voice — so residents are finally represented the way they deserve.
